Saint's Corner: Benedict the Moor



Name: Benedict the Moor or Benedict of Palermo
Birth & Death: 1524 - 4 April 1589
Feast Day: 4 April
Country of Origin: Born in Italy to African parents
History: The son of slaves who had converted, he was freed before his birth but remained in the employment of his parent's master. He was noticed by a group of Franciscan hermits after remaining dignified when being insulted for his colour. He joined the group, originally working as the cook but soon became novice master and later the superior, but he later relinquished his role as superior and returned to his work as the cook.
